EVENING SKIES

What on earth is going on with Blogger? Everything has gone weird in my right sidebar...help! Aside from that, I've been photographing the evening skies over the last couple of weeks with the enthusiasm of a child. As an obsessive adherent to routine, it's been very strange to go out at this time. However, it is now part of my NEW routine, and once the light goes, I will really miss it. 7.00pm-7.30pm exactly, regular as clockwork. Then up to see OB to bed; his light out at 8.00pm-8.15pm. He gets very grumpy about his bedtime being earlier than his friends', but natural talent is not the only reason for his academic success. Call me old fashioned but I think children go to bed far too late these days. According to studies, they need around ten hours sleep a night until the age of about 14 to function properly. Anyway, apologies for the ranting, grumpy tangent there. Here are the evening skies that make me exclaim as I toil up the hill with the dogs.

Incessant rain today. I have been drenched by horizontal downpours on a number of occasions and the wind is horrendous. We're parking the car away from the tree whose branch fell off earlier in the year just in case. It's due to be drastically cut next week but until then, better to be safe than sorry. Hello Autumn. I defrosted the freezer today. It took over three hours of hard labour. I really must do it more often! Until next time, here's Snippet in his new, not so lurid, blue tag. We'll see how long this one lasts......

  1. You're right, those skies are lovely. I thought one of them looked like smoke coming out of a chimney! lol.

  2. I catch myself from time to time becoming 'hung up' on some small ritual or routine. Your new habit of viewing the evening skies is resulting in some stunning photos. I'm pleased that you are sharing them.

  4. Great sky shots.
Some fairly ominous clouds down here too, and the horizontal rain. Being down in a valley we miss the best of any sunsets, I really should make the effort to climb up the hill occasionally!

  8. Really, really lovely series of photos!! I know what you mean about the light too--I heard on our news this evening that we've lost 20 minutes of daylight since the first of September. I felt my mood sink when they said that--It makes me want to hibernate! :-)

    1. Do you do that stupid thing we do here of putting the clocks back/forward every six months? It's a very depressing day!

  9. Wonderful moody skies - thank you Em. I agree with you about sleep for children. But I have also read that being away from internet devices, and things that emit ... is it radio-waves?... something is important to ensure the growing brain is not exposed to too much what-ever-it-is. As a result we have moved our mobile phone chargers so they're not on the bedside table. Someone will be able to sort out my wooly thinking - clever bloggers!
Anyway, thanks for the lovely photos. I particularly liked the dark sky ones!

  13. Fantastic skyscapes Em and it is hard to pick a favourite, though the first is particularly beautiful and I also like the last shot with the heavy looking shower clouds looming over Dartmoor :-)

  14. Beautiful skies over Dartmouth Em, it's interesting to see how our photos and activities change over the seasons. Agree children don't get enough sleep, they need routine and no distractions for this to happen, instead of computers and TV soaps!

    1. OB hasn't discovered the soap yet and I don't think he will. He tends to watch recorded stuff and dvds if anything. Computer games are the real problem but he's only allowed half an hour a day!

  15. Brilliant stripy, wispy and streaky skies! I always had to go to bed around half 8 on school nights until I was a bit older than 14 I think. No good going to school sleepy!

    1. So depressing. Let's hope for clear crisp days to offset those nights, rather than endless rain!

  18. We live in a valley too (or rather, half way up its steep side) and so I miss evening skies. I did enjoy sitting out on the patio and sky-watching in late August, whilst it was warm enough. Lovely photos as always, and now I have been up to your wonderful place, I can see where you stood to take one or two of the photos.

  19. Still no takers for next door. It looks worse by the day!

  20. OB probably doesn't appreciate it right now, but he is fortunate to have a parent that insists on plenty of sleep. Too many kids are allowed to stay up to all hours, lack of parental supervision.

I love the late evening sky. Wish we weren't surrounded by all these trees! But fall is coming and soon my viewing area will open up!

    1. Routine is also a type 1 diabetic's best friend!

We're surrounded by trees too, so as to protect us from the gales but at least we only have to walk two minutes to get past them.

  21. I have only been to Dartmoor a couple of times Em, but I do know that when it rains there, it really rains. Don't expect Snippet minds though.

    Gorgeous skies.
Re your comment : You should try driving in the cart it's fabulous and any pony I have ever trained for it loves having the job and is as proud as punch to do it ! Quite the connection really . My modern shetland takes it to a whole new level I will post her later in the season she absolutely adore it and the connection is such that I drive her bitless with full confidence.
