Sitting here in the aftermath of six ten year old boys' afternoon action. The cake no longer looks like this and there is a Nerf gun rubber bullet missing. I should think Jack has probably eaten it and we know where we'll be seeing that tomorrow. If you don't know what a Nerf gun is, and I didn't, it seems that every boy other than OB had one until today, when he has joined a very nonexclusive club; not one I'm that keen on but I grit my teeth and hope that it will stay in a cupboard. They were so full of pizza that not many of them were interested in the cake. The cube took over an hour and a half and is not the perfect thing I had in my head. Never mind - I did my best. It looks slightly better here I think......
The weather has been so wonderful I can't quite believe it. A couple of days ago, the light was such that the whole moor looked blonde. The new growth hasn't even started to come through so the pale dead deciduous grasses were blown out by the brightness.
Tornado with his mum:
Yesterday morning was cold and frosty
This was taken from some way off so apologies for quality but I thought it was funny how unimpressed the top Great Tit looks with the bottom one:
I can still see you.
A buzzard on the wing:
The dogs appearing to be admiring the view:
The birthday bike is a great success, if a little big at the moment:
The bunting can come down and the balloons popped, the celebrations over for another year. One of the friends is still here and I can hear them chatting upstairs in bed. Can you remember what you talked about with your friends at that age? I realise that I really can't. I wish I could. So, until next time, have a lovely Sunday and here are those dogs in poses that sum them up perfectly.
What a great cake, and what great photos (as usual!). All bloody wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you Tom.
DeleteYour Rubik`s Cake is brilliant. Happy Birthday to OB!
ReplyDeleteThat looks a wonderful walk, up in the sunlight on the blonde moor. The last photo is a great portrait of Snip :-)
He definitely needs a haircut.
DeleteWhat a terrific cake ! I think OB must have loved it.
ReplyDeleteI just love as always your photos but I adore the last two you left us with.
Perfect !
Now lets eat some cake !
cheers, parsnip
I did and I'm feeling fat.
DeleteYou did a great job on the cake!! Baking cakes is one of my favorite things to do, but decorating them is not something I am at all good at, so I envy anyone with talent like yours who can!
ReplyDeleteI also love the photos. The moors are so beautiful in any light, as are its inhabitants! And well, the photos today of Snippet and Jack are my favorites, what a view!!
Thank you Kim. With all your charges, I'm surprised you have time for anything, let alone cake decorating!
DeleteI would love to walk on your moor. I think the wood pigeon photos are my favorites of this post--but love your 10 year old on that new bike also. And what can I say--dogs racing in the wind are a joy.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever come over MM, make sure you build in a visit down here and we can go walking.
DeleteOB looks great on his new bike and the cake is impressive, love it! The Moors look glorious and you captured it beautifully!
ReplyDeleteHe's getting more confident by the day. I hope he wants to use it over the moor as I'm really jealous when I see people hurtling around on their bikes!
DeleteYour dogs, racing madly or just lolling around always bring a smile to my face.
ReplyDeleteMe too Chris. They really enrich my life.
Deletegreat cake! Lewis had nerf guns almost 20 years ago, I didnt realise they were still around. great pics of the dogs, Snippet looks very like our Billy in that last pic. Yes I'd put money on it that you are picking bits of the nerf missile out of his poo today LOL
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Nerf had been going that long but then, why would I, I suppose? I know about it now though. " out of 6 gone now.......oh dear.
DeleteYou did a great job on the Rubik's cake....no way could I have made that. Nice to see the moor looking washed out like this, another aspect to it...I think it's an ever changing landscape. So many of your photographs (well All actually) making wonderful Cards/Postcards at some time (although perhaps you may need to rethink the headless pidgeon, lol ) ;)
ReplyDeleteI've finished negotiations with the printers AT LAST and am expecting the results any day now....I can't wait!
DeleteWell done on the cake Em, it's brilliant. Love the photo selection, buzzards have been seen a lot here and cause a commotion among the gulls. We are off for a walk this morning to Sharkham Point so will see what photos I can get.
ReplyDeleteI'll look forward to seeing them. I'd love to see a Buzzard causing a commotion!
DeleteSo pleased that OB's birthday was such a success. Also so glad that you gritted your teeth and bought that gun (SO important that OB has what his peers have with this sort of thing.) I think that Rubik's cube is brilliant, and as I adore marzipan (looks as though that is what it is made of) I would have eaten the lot gladly if you needed it finishing off. Happy birthday OB.
ReplyDeleteWe too have had several days of glorious weather - doesn't it make you feel better?
Actually, the gun was a present but I completely agree about his peers. So difficult sometimes though. Luckily, he doesn't have a naturally violent bone in his body, so it's all about fun for him. The weather is like medicine!
DeleteDeeply impressed with the cake Em, glad OB had a good day!
ReplyDeleteThe pigeons have started shuttling back and forth with bits of twig here. New nest site this year... a tree that was going to get the chop :(
Ooooo - that's annoying. Not an endangered species though.....pigeon pie?
DeleteGreat set of pictures. I liked the open sky shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment about my "wordy blog" - as you may gather I do tend to put a bit of work into it and it's good to find out that people notice!
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
PS: all good on this side of the world - in fact it was autumnal this weekend, so spring must be on its way for you.
Blogging is a lot more work than people think isn't it? Spring is definitely here at last thank goodness. I have no idea what an Australian Autumn looks like I realise, so do post some Autumnal shots when you have them.
DeleteWhat a splendid cake! I hope the boys thought it tasted as good as it looks!
ReplyDeleteSo glad your weather is clear and bright and that the dogs were out there enjoying every bit of it.
What a breath of fresh air.
Like your new photo; I wasn't sure if it was you at first! Keep wrapped up warm over there until spring reaches you too. x
DeleteThe moor is vast; it seems endless like the sea. Does it appear that way to you, too, or is is grounded and bounded visually and mentally.
ReplyDeleteMy grandsons had nerf guns. They only appeared when a great group of boys assembled, and that was seldom.
I know exactly what you mean and, yes, when I look out over it to the horizon, it does feel boundless and immense.
DeleteOB was shooting the washing on the line today so no companions required it seems!
Fantastic cake Em- well done you - and I LOVE the pic of OB on his bike- sums up childhood perfectly! xx
ReplyDeleteThat bike seat is SO uncomfortable. I am told it's because, when mountain biking, you hardly sit down. This is not the sport for me to replace riding. I'll stick to walking! x
DeleteThe cake looks terrific! The blonde moor looks a bit dazzling with the sunshine and the blue skies - so fascinating. I'm glad the bike was a success and it seems you managed to keep it a secret until the big day? It sounds like OB had a great birthday!
ReplyDeleteHe did Wendy - thank you. You're right, it was dazzling and I wish I'd had sunglasses!
DeleteBravo on the cake, Em.....he must have been thrilled....
ReplyDeleteLove the bird shots...hopefully Spring for us SOON!
Have a great week....
Cheers!
Linda :o)
You too Linda - thank you. x
DeleteCongratulations on the excellent cake, I like marzipan too if that was what it was made. Happy child on his bike what more could you ask for ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was made from that hideous pre-coloured icing you can buy and roll out. It doesn't like being cut into regular shapes so I spent a lot of time tapping the edges with a knife and trying to line them up!
DeleteWell done on the cake - it looks superb. I would think OB was thrilled with it and the bike :) Sounds like he had a wonderful birthday :)
ReplyDeleteLove the photos of the moor too :)
He did - thanks RR.
ReplyDeleteLate on parade here! Glad OB had a great birthday, and what a brilliant cake! Clever Em : )
ReplyDeleteLovely photos of the "blonde bombshell" moor, and the birds, and the dogs having such fun. I wonder if Tornado will stay or be sold? He's so beautifully marked.
I've completely lost track of which ponies belong to which farmer; they don't seem to be so obviously branded. Lizzy and Betty's owners have got rid of most of their herd which is very depressing. I was so fond of both of them but I fear they will be on someone's plate over the channel. Fingers crossed for little Tornado!
ReplyDeleteYour cake looks great, at least you took a photo of it before it has eaten! I glad OB likes the bike. The sky looks so blue in your pictures. The picture of the Great tits is fantastic. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteI just wish I'd had a telephoto lens for the Great Tits. Why do I get the feeling I might get unwanted traffic from that last remark!
DeleteWhat an amazing cake! I am nominating you for a Lighthouse blog award, Em. You will see my nomination here. Please feel free to act on it if you so choose!
ReplyDeleteThanks Caroline! Much appreciated even if I don' t get round to it or forget!
DeleteGreat Cake Em ~ and it looks like the bike was just the right present !
ReplyDeleteHe's still more interested in Minecraft! Boys.....
DeleteWow, love that cake! Has made me have a cake craving now.... eek!
ReplyDeleteI have a permanent one of those!
DeleteThat cake is wonderful...well done!!
ReplyDeleteThe last time that the Nerf guns came out at our place was over a month ago, and I'm still finding 'bullets' in the strangest places.
As always, your photos of the landscape are beautiful :)
Still no sign of the missing ones so perhaps Jack managed to digest them and extract some kind of nerf-nutrition.
DeleteBelated happy birthday to OB! I think you did a wonderful job on the cake! And hope as you do that the gun stays in the cupboard. Hopefully the bike will be the focus of attention :)
ReplyDeleteLast photo of Snippet was wonderful!
The ponies and sheep give a perspective on how vast the moor is. It's a shame that there are not the amount of ponies there once was.
So many of the farmers are giving up keeping ponies and, unfortunately, it seems to be the more responsible ones. Very sad. That first year I was blogging will always stay with me; the herd were so special. We should be due a first foal soon although I haven't seen any obviously pregnant mares come to think of it.....we'll see. X
DeleteThe cake is very impressive!! Bet it tasted good too! Lovely photos of the moor, hope we get some more good weather :)
ReplyDeleteIt tasted great thanks to the relative lack of icing......OB isn't a fan.
