RETURN OF THE BIRDS

Firstly, Thank you so much to everyone who commented on the last post about OB's Tourettes. He was really touched and loved the idea of Internet Aunties. It feels so much better for me to have told you what has been troubling me for so long. It's incredibly helpful to know I can talk about it here rather than keep it all in. I really really appreciate it.

Back to the birds. They've been absent for so long but are definitely back now all the berries have been eaten. So here is the Great Spotted Woodpecker (female):

Nuthatch:

Blackbird:

Chaffinch (male):

Robin:

Chaffinch (female):

Yesterday, on doctor's orders, I tried to really relax during my walk with the dogs, rather than rush it, worrying about, well, everything. I took a lot of pictures of the dogs and did as good a job of relaxation as I'm capable of at the moment. Snippet was less camera shy than he has been recently.

Doggy Twister

Fabulous Devil's Matchsticks

Not sure what this lichen is. I can't find it in my lovely, yet obviously not very comprehensive book. These next three are of Crottle or Cudbear Lichen, which covers so much of the rocks here:

My stick:

I loved the colour of this pony's mane:

Tomorrow, we are all going to our South West Tourettes Group Christmas party. OB loves to meet the other kids (all boys) who have the condition too. It can be quite stressful for us as we look into the face of the possible future with the older ones. Being very suggestible, OB picks up tics from the others. The whole thing is a kind of tic-sharing forum. Anyway, we are all taking something to eat and I made these biscuits....I fear Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry would have something derogatory to say about them. Not exactly a good or even bake!

After that embarrassing baking revelation, I had better get on with the wrapping of presents and final few cards. The tree is up and decorated but until the presents are all under it, I won't take a photo. So, until next time, have a lovely weekend and here are the dogs, lost on the grass.

  1. Lucky you - a Nuthatch! I've never seen one here. Brilliant photos as always.

    1. We have a pair who have nested in our box two year's running, which is such a privilege. They are my favourite bird.

  3. Snippet put on some fabulous posing , even while Jack did Yoga on him !
I too very much enjoy the look of that pony's mane . I also enjoyed seeing Trigger in the last post.

  4. I always love seeing the dogs, I especially liked the little windswept face!

I'm glad you feel you can share here. Part of that might be that you can let us know when OB needs a bit of a boost and his Aunties can do a wee bit of cheer leading for him. Just don't expect me to wear one of those itty bitty skirts, I don't think they're even legal for over 40's! :-D

    1. I barely wear a skirt at all these days Kath and, if I do, it's definitely below the knee! Thanks for your your Auntie status is much appreciated. x

    1. The party was fine. We met some really interesting people and it's such a relief to meet parents who are going through similar stuff.

  7. Lovely picks--including the star 'cookies!" The Tourette group party sounds like an encouraging things--for the boys--definitely wearing for parents and care-givers.
I do think walking helps in any long-term stressful situation--sometimes it is more 'stomping about' than a relaxed stroll, but surely there must be benefits even on such days.
I've been delighted to receive one of 'your cards'--from Bovey Belle. I think its a lovely use of your exceptional photos.

    1. So pleased you liked the card. I was definitely stomping this morning in the pelting rain. My ex-German army gore-tex trousers were not the bargain I thought they were and are pouring in water at the knees!

  8. Interesting, the ocean of difference between birds. The nuthatch I recognized; the robin I didn't.

    1. I love seeing birds and their variations around the world too. Some of the US Nuthatches are just lovely but I love our one's burglar's mask.

  9. Those bikkies look delicious to me.
Keep up your wonderful photographs - I am sure it is very therapeutic taking them.
Give OB a hug and and thumbs up from me - I am pleased to be a Yorkshire Dales 'auntie'

    1. I will Pat - thank you. He's very huggable and affectionate, for which we are very grateful. I know some children with Aspergers can be the opposite which I would find incredibly difficult.

  10. I'm envious of your Nuthatches, as always. Still no sign of any here. I love all the other birds and your moor photos, including the lovely, windswept Snippet. I must get a good ID book for lichens/mosses etc too. And your biscuits look delicious - very sparkly and festive.

    1. We are really lucky with the Nuthatches. I do hope they nest here again next year. The biscuits WERE delicious and the room was quite dark so no one noticed how splodgy they were!

  11. I do love your pics, it is so hard to choose a favourite, the bird ones are gorgeous close-ups and the dogs hidden in the grass I like. We have the very same birds as you visiting our feeder outside the kitchen window and like you our woodpecker has started visiting again.

  12. Great photos - I love seeing all the lichens you discover on your walks :)
Our woodpeckers have returned but I really envy you the nuthatch - one species we've never had in the garden.
Your biscuits look delicious and very festive :) Hope the party goes well and isn't too tiring.

    1. It wasn't as tiring as expected and great to hear other parent's experiences and laugh about stuff that can normally get one down.

  13. Great pics of Snippet in particular- he could be the Hound of the Baskervilles! The lichen is gorgeous too. I think your biscuit stars are great- that's normal cooking, not fluffy nonsense cooking!
Good luck with the crimble party- I should imagine it's extremely helpful for OB to be with others who have the same experiences. Strength in numbers. X

    1. Absolutely CT, although the children were all pretty tic-free in that situation. The Tourettes adults were far more active and relaxed about it. There was music and lights which OB loved and they just ran around a lot. Nice for the siblings of the sufferers too, for whom it can be a nightmare. OB being an only child has its advantages!

  14. Your photos cheer me up so much - all the things I'm interested in. I think the Crottle was used for dyeing clothes (wool in particular). The little Devil's Matchsticks is a brilliant close up. I have always had a "thing" about fungi, but Keith thinks I am slightly nutso to be that way!

We have our seed feeders up for the birds now and although it is just the tit family, chaffinches and the odd sparrow or so visiting, it is lovely to waatch them.

    1. reddish brown or purple I believe. Perhaps I should have a go although I'm not sure it would do my saucepans any good! I often spend five or ten minutes crouching by a rock examining the lichen so you're not alone in your nutso status.

  15. How lucky to have such a range of birds visiting. The morning sky and lichen is fab too. Your biscuits look lovely, homemade ones always taste better. Hope the Christmas party wasn't to bad for you all.

  16. Love the lichen, it really is fabulous stuff! Great collection of images-especially like the biscuits and the wind swept Snippet. No birds in the garden today as we have terrible weather.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Isn't it terrible? Poor Trigger is stuck up here and hasn't seen his friends for two days. It's just too exposed and dangerous out there in horizontal rain and gale force winds with a pony with a propensity to panic!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lovely bird photos, but I must admit the pony is stunning! Snippet looks like me out in the wind!

Homemade always tastes better, looks great to me! Hope the party wasn't too stressful.

  21. Gorgeous photos of the Moors I remember so well. One day I hope to get back there. Your doggies are adorable too. 22. Indeed a holiday would be good I have to admit, Em. Some day I hope it will happen, I will just have to remember to buy the occasional Lottery ticket if I am ever to win. I would definitely come visit you & yours if it was a rather large win. Hope the party was fun. I love the looks of those cookie xx

    1. I think holidays should be two weeks long. I haven't had one like that since I was a student! You spend the first week winding down so you can actually relax in the second one. That's what we should be aiming for with our lottery win!

  26. Meanwhile it was 40 degrees centigrade here yesterday in Melbourne, Australia. Most or the rest of Australua has had much worse heat waves but we have had it mild till now. It is a challenge to imagination and to empathy when different parts of our plane suffer such different conditions, don't you think? I guess blogs are one way we work on making and keeping connections? Jean
