THE RAMBLINGS OF A STRUGGLING ARTIST ON LIFE WITH TWO TERRIERS, A PONY WITH ISSUES AND OTHER WILDLIFE AND BIRDS THAT CROSS OUR PATH

1 April 2014

TYPICAL......

......that the day I forget to put the memory card in the camera, is the day I have three buzzards circling 30 feet over my head and a flock of Golden Plover mooching without fear twenty feet away. Absolutely infuriating. This morning at 7.30am however, I did have the card in and the sun was low and the frost quite hard.

Yesterday when I got home late morning, the whole of our little peninsula appeared to be shrouded in mist. However, when I opened the car door, I  realised, coughing and spluttering, that it was in fact smoke. Smoke from more swailing perhaps? After lunch, we set out to determine its origin. From the wind direction, I suspected it might be down towards the river. the skies were brooding:

Devil's Matchsticks have been sadly absent for a couple of months but I found this lovely patch nestling in a crevice:

Jack rolled in fox poo and had to have a bath when we got home:

Moss is flowering:

I got closer....

....and closer:

And at last, the culprit; two huge charred areas:

I made sure Jack got VERY wet in the hope it would wash off the poo; it didn't obviously:

A dog with two tails?

M has added yet more to the bird feeding station. The birds are not sure about it yet. It was an attempt to catch the stuff the Nuthatches keep chucking out of the seed feeder that ends up in a ground sludge. Time will tell.

The strange hangy thing was a bargain from Lidl in Okehampton at the weekend and is going down well:

A couple more bird pics:

Something the other day possessed me to open an Instagram account. I don't really even understand how it works, but I seem to have two followers. No idea how. It's just an easy way to post phone photos instantly and I'm getting a bit addicted when out and about. If you want to have a look, go to Instagram.com. My account is called Wiggy55. Wiggy was my lovely old cat by the way.

Jack is driving me mad. He's turning into a digger. Today he tried to dig up three hedge plants, made three holes in the lawn and dug up one of my baby white Foxglove plants. I am NOT happy. So until next time, here he is, looking innocent. Grrrrrr.

  1. I have never heard of let alone seen a devils matchstick before so I think that they are amazing, thank you for sharing. Now these dogs and the fox do doos, what is with that?!?!?!?!?! WHY!!!!!!!!! They all do it, but I cannot for the life of me see the attraction, why would you want to smell like a fox of all things!!!! Dogs hey, they have a life of their own that is for sure. Hope that the new bird feeder arrangements go down well - they certainly have a lot of things to try out! xx

    1. Perhaps they see a fox as a kind of A-list celebrity that they want to emulate?

    2. I definitely never thought of it like that, but it is a good suggestion!!! xx

  3. oh yes, that innocent look - know it all too well. Sod's law re the camera. I'd love to see golden plover. Fox poo has to be the most evil smelling stuff on the planet. Hope you got it all off ok! I thought of you today - the field studies centre do a fold out id chart for lichen. No idea how comprehensive it is but may be worth a look. Three quid per sheet can't be bad. Just Google field studies centre. If you can't find it email me and I'll send you the link. Xx

  11. Simply beautiful pics, don't you just love this time of the year when the morning light is so lovely? And as for fox poo, it's the bane of my life as a Puppymummy! My two just can't resist a roll in it either.
    Have a happy day,

  13. Beautiful frost photos Em! I hate it when I forget my memory card - so infuriating! Similarly when I forget my bins - always a bird to be spied on! I love the moss photos and the one of the two tailed dog :) When we were down in Cornwall the other week, I thought of you as we drove close to Dartmoor :)

    1. I'm lazy and only take a camera, which is really silly as I end up missing so much trying to photograph birds. I should just watch them sometimes!

  14. Great macro shots Em.
A tip for you, I have a small pouch attached to my camera strap with a couple of spare memory cards in it. It came as part of a Lowepro camera sharp, which I have since worn out and I just added it to my current strap. So if the dreadful day comes that I have forgotten to replace the card in the camera, I know I have a back up.

    1. VERY good tip - thanks Roy. They're so cheap these days I can't believe it. I'm sure I can find something suitable - thank you.

  15. You have such a keen eye for photo taking, Em. It is maddening to go out without the memory card, this I know, also without a fully charged battery. I now carry an extra memory card along in my wallet with me.

    1. The battery thing is extremely annoying too - you're right. I'm too mean to buy a second battery!

  18. I don't think he looks innocent at all. I think that look says, 'well. what are you going to do about it? You love me far too much to get really mad!' (most likely true)

    1. When he knows I;m cross, he does that awful cowering thing of a dog that's been hit in the past. I hate that so much. If I have to put him in the house when he's been naughty, I carry him and hold the scruff of his neck at the same time in the hope that some maternal discipline memory kicks in! He's just being a toddler and it's always more difficult if you have an impeccably behaved Snippet around.....hmmmm.

  22. The moors and the sky are truly breath-taking for me (I really do mean this. I find I'm repeating myself on your comments space.) As for the dogs... fox poo or no, (haven't ever smelled fox poo actually) they are essential -- don't ever post without a photo of them, please! Then the birds are the cherry on top. Just my favorite blog of all I read.

  27. I love all the photos, but especially the first one. The moor looks magical in the early morning light. I love Jack rushing through the water having his first bath, too. I wish I was organised enough to always carry a spare memory card and battery with me, it's such good thinking.

You might get a bit bored with what I talk about in mine. Cats, dogs, woods, beach, cats .. old lady who lives in the woods stuff. lol

Love your dogs by the way.
