SHOOTING THE SUN

It is a rare thing for me to get out on the moor in the evening, but thanks to a couple of nights with OB sleeping at friend's houses and a lack of bath water at the right time tonight, I have been out at sunset with the dogs. I know we are always told not to shoot into the sun but I really don't care. Here are the results:

What amazing weather we're having. It was blisteringly hot today and, this morning, we had one of those very pleasing phenomena whereby the moor was blessed with stunning blue skies, and everywhere below our altitude was shrouded in thick mist. We rarely do better in the weather department, but it CAN happen.

Here are a few pictures of the dogs....

It's so good to be home and I really appreciate that we live in the most stunning place. It's a terrible admission, but I don't actually enjoy going away very much and, barring the trips to the Maldives, Canada and New Zealand that I am unlikely to ever afford, I'd rather stay at home. So, until next time, here's lovely Snippet tonight on the top of Kestor Rocks.

  1. Love the pics, they capture some of the many moods of Dartmoor, it's such a special place. That pup is growing so big already, love his wrinkly forehead, he is a stunner!

  2. You serm to have broken another Golden Rule about shooting straight into a dog's arse as well, Em.

  3. Great pics of the dogs, and the sunset too.
I know just what you mean about going away. The very best bit of it is that big bend coming off the M5 onto the A30. Almost home.

    1. Oh yes.....that long curve where you're meant to do 30mph but everyone does 60.

  6. Love the gold and black one with what look like "runes" on the hillside. Lovely photo. Jack is such a cutey! Bet he's given Snippet a new lease on life - they look like best friends.

    1. Hi Robin - lovely to hear from you. What you can see on the horizon is Watern Tor, somewhere I always intend to walk to but never get the time!

  7. I shoot into the sun all the time and have gotten some of my best photos that way. Of course it is all hit or miss but I love them. And of course I always take credit "oh I was trying to get the suns rays just so". hahahahaha
The last cloud photo of yours before the dogs is lovely I have a similar one. It is a favorite.

    The Boys look so happy.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. I do think Snippet is happy to have the company and they really are sleeping snuggled up a lot now.

  8. Lovely skyscapes Em, it is sometimes worth breaking the rules isn't it :-) I also love those late summer and autumn mornings when the lowlands are shrouded in mist and fog while the uploads bask in golden sunshine.

  9. Having seen where you live now, I wouldn't want to leave home either! Excepting a little break from the Wicked Witch of the West occasionally (IYKWIM!!)

Stunning photos - some of my best ones have been shooting directly into the sun, especially with my old camera (my newer slightly more expensive one is a bit of a failure in that department). I LOVE the one of the dogs running along sharing a stick, and the photo with the true gold bar effect, in the middle.

I was sat in the lounger with a book yesterday evening, frequently looking at the sky, as there were some amazing very high up cloud formations - so ethereal, with little cat stripes, and then mackerel skies forming, and elsewhere, dappled grey horses.

If I lived on Dartmoor I wouldn't want to live it either!!

    1. I've always been a non-breaker of rules, so it's very refreshing to do so.

  14. Hi Em, beautiful atmospheric images of Dartmoor-as it should look. The weather in Brixham has been great too and we've had some lovely sunsets. The dogs do look very happy together-you are lucky that Snippet has taken to Jack so well. I love the pic of Jack asleep on the doormat.

  15. Hi Em Wonderful series of sunset shots. When I see sunsets, I just keep shooting as you can see from my post of yesterday(5 Sept)I always love you shots of the 2 dogs, the pup is growing up fast and seems to be enjoying life. Just checked out your previous post and loved the mud and boats in it and it reminded me of my days when I lived in Heybridge, Maldon Essex where we had the barges.

    1. So many people seem to have found that post so evocative. I was reminded of childhood visits to a friend's grandparents' farm in Essex too.

  16. What wonderful skies! We are coming down to Devon next week but it looks as if we might have missed that wonderful weather. Never mind, we had it up here too in North Wales. We have that phenomenon too where we are high up and clear and sunny above the mist. It is fabulous isn't it!

  18. It is so interesting to see a place in different light! Not being able to see the Sun rise or set in the summer (trees) I really miss seeing the Sun go down.

Looks like the dogs are playing well together. Love the shared stick photo!

My father was in the air force and we lived all over the US and the world. I'd just as soon stay home these days than go somewhere on vacation.

  19. I just find the whole travelling thing very stressful these days. Perhaps it's an age thing! I wouldn't mind flying somewhere but my partner won't, so we have to go through the whole car packing, ferry to Europe thing, and I just can't be bothered when we live somewhere so nice.
