THAT ORCHID AND VERY WET FEET

Another rainy night, so the marsh was pretty impassable. Tussock jumping got me back to yesterday's position and here it is. They are so exotic looking for this country. I'll have to go back when more of the flowers are out. My feet were sodden by the time I made it out of there. I wouldn't risk it if I didn't know the land extremely well. On the way home, I found this egg, the contents of which had clearly been eaten. It was quite large and I have a horrible feeling it might be from an owl. I guess that's nature but it doesn't stop it being sad sometimes.

That's all for today. Another pile of ironing seems to have materialised from nowhere. Not sure why but I can't get the text above to justify.....in a typesetting sense obviously! Never mind. At least there's a break in the rain but I can soon change that by putting some washing on the line!

  2. Could be a goose egg, but I can't quite relate to the size.

  3. It's too small for a goose or a duck unfortunately. If I'd had a ruler I could have laid it down CSI-style to make things easier! The shell was incredibly thin and unlike any hen's egg I've ever come across. I've done lots of research and, sadly, an owl is looking most likely. There are a lot around here including a short eared owl.. I sometimes catch sight of one gliding into the trees in the early morning, but not often.

  4. Lovely photos and beautiful orchid. Thank you for your tussock-jumping to snap it for us. Brings back memories of trying to get across Fox Tor Mire - we could see our car 100 yds away by Whiteworks, but in the way was a REALLY soggy bit and only negotiated by a tremendous leap. In my case, not quite tremendous enough as I went in up to the thighs . . . The joys of being short!

What a pity it looks like a stolen Owl egg. We have lots and lots of Tawnys round here (they like our oak and ash trees).

    1. I do hope you manage to get back here; The way you talk sounds like you miss it so much! I know I would, however beautiful the place I lived was. It's even soggier here today and the rug has had to go back on Trigger. Not good in June.
